 Let’s keep everyone on a bike safe this summer!

Of all motor vehicles, motorcycles are the most vulnerable on our roadways. Because motorcycles do not have safety belts, riders can be thrown off the bike in a crash resulting in serious injury or event death. Hitting a truck is like hitting a steel wall.

More than half of motor cycle accidents involve another car or truck; drivers need to become more aware of motorcyclists.

Here are a few safety tips for drivers;

  • Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane width.
  • Don't assume a motorcycle is going to turn just because its signal is flashing. Some signals are not self-canceling and motorcyclists forget to turn them off.
  • Motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars, so allow greater following distance.
  • Realize that wet pavement and road debris can create driving conditions that are especially hazardous for motorcyclists.
  •  Keep your trash in your car; throwing trash out the window can cause a motorcyclist to get into an accident
  • Take the extra time to look for a motorcycle in your blind spot when you are changing lanes on the highway or when you are at an intersection
  • A motorcycle is most likely closer than it looks; avoid pulling out in front of a motorcyclist, wait the extra time to let them pass by you.
  • Put a greater distance between a motorcycle and your cars, due to the motorcycles smaller size brake lights are not as easily identified.
  •  Focus more; put down the phone, ipod and food
  •  ALWAYS use your turn signals, this way motorcyclists know which way you are going

  • Remember that if you ever were involved in a crash with a motorcyclist and it was your fault you would probably never be able to forgive yourself; so take the time to check and avoid an accident. Also make sure your auto insurance fully covers you if you do happen to get in any kind of accident with a motorcycle.
