Tornadoes often strike quickly and with very little warning! Therefore it is important to be prepared for a tornado strike at any time. Here are some tips to get your home and family prepared for tornado season:

  • Stay on top of changing weather patterns. Watching the weather channel on TV or listening to the radio will let you know when tornado conditions are present. Be sure to have a small radio with batteries in the event of a power loss, so you can listen to updates while you and your family are in your shelter area.

Be aware of the following danger signs like:

A. Large Hail

B. Dark, greenish sky

C. Loud roar similar to that of a freight train.

D. A large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)

  • Have a tornado shelter ready at all times and make sure your family members know where it is. Make sure your children know where to go in the event of a tornado that occurs while they are at school, at daycare, a babysitters’ house, etc.
  • Have a disaster preparedness kit ready. Put together some canned foods, a first aid kit, bottled water, a flash light and other necessary items that you can take with you into the tornado shelter. Keep these items together in a duffel bag or a storage container so you can grab them and go when you need them.
  • Be sure to consider your pets in your plan as well. Include canned food for them and any medications they may need, an extra leash and/or a kennel they can be put in while in your shelter area, they become scared and hard to control.
  • Last but not least- check your homeowners’ insurance policy to make sure you have enough coverage to cover you in the event your home was damaged by tornado winds and/or hail. If you have any questions about this coverage you should contact your homeowners' insurance agent.
